My Daughter's Bridal Shower Cake
by Jodi
(Lake, MI)
I have twin daughter's whose wedding's were 2 1/2 months apart in Feburary and May 2011. In Feburary I made the wedding cake, which was my first decorated cake. I felt I had to be equal to both my girls so in May I made the Bridal shower and the Grooms cake.
Decorating has all been a major learning experience with the help of great friends that I have made on-line at the Wilton website. I am self taught. I can't drive due to my disability so I'm unable to take classes. I am deeply indebted to my friends for their help and advice.
I decided that I wanted to make a design for her that would represent the bride and bridesmaids. I made a double layer 1/2 sheet and used the Wonder Mold for the base of the wedding dress and the Mini Wonder Molds for the base of the bridesmaids dresses. I used the colors of the wedding party to make the cake. Her colors were Lilac with an assortment of purple colored roses in her bouquet.
The flavors were White Chocolate with White Chocolate Buttercream. The dresses and Roses were made with White Chocolate.
I learned a couple of things with this project. It was my first sheet cake experience. Making it was the easy part, but when it came to cooling it right side up I had to have my husband help me flip them.
Chocolate Modeling Tip
When it comes to working with Modeling Chocolate make sure that it isn't in 80 degree weather. Usually the end of May it is still cool, but not this year. It becomes sticky and is not easy to work with. Trying to drape the chocolate was frustrating it kept stretching so I had to work fast after screwing up the first one and having to re-do it.
The roses I did the night before so they were fine. Also one other thing I learned was I didn't need such a large size. Everyone ended up taking some home!
When I told the girls at the shower that the bride and bridesmaids all had their own pieces to take home with them they loved the idea.
I had a lot of fun with this and also learned a lot.
Thank you Jodi, What a pretty cake. I love the bridesmaids dresses and the fact that they got to take home their individual dresses. Very nice story and you added a couple of tips too. Really excellent entry to the Contest!
