Leaning Blue Velvet
I am not a professional baker by any means, but I have loved to bake/decorate cakes since I was in high school (some 18 years ago).
My mother & father never had a wedding reception so for their 40th anniversary (June '12), she asked me to make a 4 tiered cake, one for each decade of their marriage. Her color theme was dark blue so I found a recipe for a blue velvet cake that matched perfectly!
It appeared to be a simple task but turned out to be more than I planned! Between my immature talent and the HOT late-June GA weather, my cake soon began to "lean"!! As soon as I saw it, I panicked but then thought, "That's ok. They have 'leaned' on each other for 40 years now & even named their farm 'Leaning J' so what more appropriate way to celebrate their anniversary than with a leaning cake!?" lol
By the time the reception actually began, the cake was leaning really bad and thanks to one of the guests, we were able to lift it up & support it so that it didn't fall completely!
TIP Lesson learned: that little plastic plate it's sitting on is only to be used as a separator, not a base! lol
The little peg legs started to give-way, which was the main contributing factor in it leaning as bad as it did! I've since acquired a
1/2 inch wooden board to use as my base from now on!! Covered in fancy foil, it looks gorgeous...much nicer than the pitiful plastic cake separator I used! Well, you live and learn! Trial and error seems to be my way of life these days!
So this is the cake I presented to my mama and daddy for their special event! Simple, yet just what she asked for: 4 tiers, blue velvet w/ cream cheese frosting, blue ribbons & Gardenias. She liked it so much, she asked me to make another one about a week later!! (not as much, just one layer!)
