Groovy Owl Birthday Cake

I have a tiny obsession with all these cute little owl party decorations, greeting cards, toys and what not. They are so incredibly adorable I just want to squeeze them. So when I finally got the chance to make an Owl cake I squealed like a little girl and grabbed my spatula.
This one is based off a collection of birthday decorations and has a groovy hippie vibe to it...love it!
So to start I baked the cakes and cooled them and then filled them and let them chill completely before carving the sides.
I use a bread knife to taper the sides, I just eyeball it to make sure the angle is the same for each tier .
I like this tapered look for funky cute cakes because it adds that little something special .
I used gel food coloring to color my
marshmallow fondant, matching the colors to the party decorations.
The Owl topper, peace sign, bird, butterfly and bows were made from the same colored fondant.
I just added some tylose powder to it so that they would dry hard.
Decorators Tip
I like to use tylose because gumpaste takes color differently then fondant and once dried the colors would not have matched the cake exactly, by adding tylose to the already colored fondant I get a perfect color match.
Using Melted Chocolate As Glue
The accents were made in advance and allowed to dry. Then I attached toothpicks and/or wooden skewers to the back using melted chocolate so that they could be inserted into the cake.
Applying The Fondant
Once the cakes were carved, iced and fondant covered, the fun starts.
To cover just the tops of the cake with fondant I chilled the butter cream iced cakes and then laid the fondant over the top, smoothing it down about half way and then trimming the excess off with a knife.
Little Details
I used various flower cutters to decorate the bottom tier, piped butter cream for the middle and a combo of fondant stripes, tiny flower and butter cream detail for the top.
Finally I added the hardened accents and then sprayed the entire thing with a mixture of pearl sheen and vodka to give it a little sparkle.
It makes me happy just to look at this cake, it's so cheery and bright plus it has that adorable little owl up there :)
