Hello, I really enjoy making cakes and want to start a cake decorating business but I live in a very small community. Is it still possible to make a career doing cakes? I have made some for my family, friends and a couple of people who saw my cakes on Facebook. I'm not sure how to get started advertising outside my community. It just seems like it is just a dream that will never come true. Please any advise will help. Thank you so much I really love this site and have learned so much from here.


Hi Shari, It is always possible have a career in cakes if you really want it, regardless of how small your community is. There is always the internet(for web building)and mail order for sending cakes to people. Start Small and grow with it.

Get some business cards made, I use Vista Print. 500 Premium Business Cards for $10. Once you start ordering from them you will receive all kinds of Free offers. But start simple with the cards.

The card should have all of your contact info and you can ask people to find you on Facebook. Make samples and box them up. Go around to a few corporations, and local business's. Let them know that you do cakes and ask them to call you the next time they have an office party. That is a great way to get you started.

Figure out prices ahead of time so that when you start getting orders you will be organized.

Always keep in mind that it takes more than skills to run a successful business. There are more to it than decorating and making the cakes that you like. Having your own bakery is a lot of hardwork, expensive and you don't really earn that much. But if thats the route that you want to go, you might wanna consider making a business plan, in that way you can see your expected expenses and how much cakes do you need to make in order to earn enough to pay the bills as well as make profit.

Yeah I guess since I am still new to cake decorating, it would be a good idea to just make them at home for a while and see how it goes. Thank you very much.
