Wow. I too am having this problem We have had this happen twice now. Both times on the top layer of a stacked cake. It only happens while we are decorating it. When it happens, we poke it with a hat pin, use our Viva towel to smooth it back out, and return it to the fridge for a few mintues to cool the butter cream. It doesn't seem to happen the next day though, just while we are decorating. It's really annoying when you have to redecorate the bubbled area.
I asked a cake decorating instructor and they had no clue as to why it would happen much less ever heard of it happening. Will keep searching.

Buttercream frosting bubbling by: Anonymous
Has happened a few times to my cakes as well. I finally mentioned it to my husband and he asked if the temp of cake is different from the temp of the frosting. I use a spatula dipped in hot water to smooth the frosting. I'm hoping that this is the problem and that same temp water as frosting and cake will be the solution!

Cake bulges by: Anonymous
Hi!! You can solve this by when you crumb coat your cake, stick a small cake dowel through the center and take it out. The cake now has somewhere to release the gas. I usually let all mine do this overnight and then decorate.
