Bling Wedding Cake
The Brides Request
The soon to be bride, who happens to be an acquaintance of mine, sent me a message requesting a cake for their wedding. She sent me some photos just to give me an idea of what she wanted her cake to look like which was a 2 tiered white cake with 3 to 5 pieces of peony gumpaste flowers in a shade of royal blue. She also wanted me to incorporate something gold within the decorations.
A Tiny Speck? Or A Stunner
Before I prepared all the materials, I asked the bride where the venue of their reception would be and took the initiative to visit the place. The reason being is that the cake she wanted would only be 12 inches tall and it boggled my mind to think that their cake might appear to be a tiny speck if the place is huge. And so my instincts were right, the venue was very big with high ceilings.
I spoke to the bride again and explained to her the situation. I suggested the addition of another layer. This would give a little more height to the cake and it would be more fitting with the size of the venue and look more stunning. So it was settled that the cake would be a 3 tiered cake with minimal flowers.
Cake Flavor
The couple chose a moist chocolate cake for all 3 tiers. I filled the cake with chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream and added chocolate bits and then I iced it with chocolate ganache in a ratio of 1 part cream to 4 parts chocolate. The ganached cakes The soon to be bride, who happens to be an acquaintance of mine sent me a message requesting for a cake for their wedding. Preparation and Assembling the Cakes
I make my gumpaste from scratch and make my own gumpaste flowers too. I know the bride just wanted a few of them but I decided to make at least 15 pieces of peonies and lots of tiny flower fillers with a dash of gold. I so prefer to make extras just in case the flow of the design does not satisfy me but of course I will ask for a bride's consent.
Before stacking the cakes I inserted 4 bubble straws on the bottom and 2nd layer. After all the tiers have stacked I inserted dowels at center from the top tier down to the bottom for added stability for I will be delivering the cake in one piece. By the way, I used up all the flowers even all of the fillers. Yeeeyyy!
I also did fondant pleats on the bottom tier because to my eye it looks more elegant. The cake was almost done when I looked at it from afar and alas I'm not quite satisfied. It looks dull to me lacks shine and glamour. That's when I decided to add some plastic stones and jewels (it's cheap but elegant) for a final touch. And Viola!!! It really adds shine especially when the light hits the stones. Surprisingly the bling bling on the cake nearly matches the gown of the bride, except for the gown has real swarovski jewels :-)
The bride was so delighted with the outcome of their bling wedding cake and just told me that she's glad that I followed my design concept rather than hers.
Who wouldn't be happy with that.
